Stephanie Smith

(Nashville, Tenn.) October 8th, 2008 — After initial raves with her Itunes release earlier this year, pop-rocker Stephanie Smith is poised to unveil her debut album Not Afraid at retail stores this December 23rd. Along with her continued work with the non-profit organization Soles4souls, Smith will travel to El Salvador with Compassion International in early December.

Cmcentral.com has raved about Not Afraid by saying, “Opening strong, moments of electronic whomping foretell an edgy momentum… Smith’s fierce vocals lay out restorative encouragement to those uncertain of their own worth.”

On the marketing front, a new radio single, “In My Eyes”, is currently going for adds at Rock radio. A music video for the title track “Not Afraid” was also just recently shot and will be widely available in the upcoming months.

Smith, a new face on the music scene, has been touring non-stop this year as momentum builds and people take notice of the 24-year old. Her packed out schedule found her making the rounds at music festivals such as Rockfest, Ichthus, AtlantaFest, Music in the Park, Kingdom Bound, and Riverstages, as well as a return to Agape Fest, the original stage that lead her to meeting TobyMac and eventually signing a deal with Gotee Records. The latest in these great emerging artist finds is Daniel Renstrom.

Adore and Tremble

Earlier this year Daniel Renstrom, a worship leader from Raleigh, North Carolina released his debut EP  “Adore and Tremble“.  Though only a few songs, (being an EP and all) Renstrom delivers a powerful message with his conversation of a man, a guitar and God.

“Adore and Tremble” the EP is a great addition to our collection of worship music. One thing I really enjoyed was how the EP flows from beginning to end. Renstrom, eases his way into things with “Quietly” his introduction to God as if meeting Him passing in the hallway and continues through the album with deeper discussion, thought and praise.

Other really great tracks on this EP are the title track “Adore and Tremble” a praise song with awesome imagery and powerful chords and “At the Cross” which I expect to be an add at worship services, if you are not using it already.

Renstrom’s voice has the easy going flow of artists like John Mayer with the raw emotion of Damien Rice. Already being compared in other reviews to artists like Derek Webb, we look forward to hearing more great works from Renstrom in the future.

Joy Whitlock God and A Girl

Every once in a while in the music industry comes along a great storyteller. Someone who can involve you in the story as if you were right there when it happens, yet keeps you on the outside just enough to allow you to visualize your own experiences. The latest in that list of storytellers is Joy Whitlock.

On Sept 16th Joy Whitlock released her debut CD “God And A Girl“. Whitlock’s blues-rock-folk style (definitely influenced by her growing up in the south) comes mixed with what could almost be the pain of a prodigal returning comes creeping up in her vocals. “God And A Girl” tells a story of a young girl who grew up in the church, took her own journey and then came back home after realizing the power, the glory and grace of God.

The CD is honest - from the self-criticizing lyrics in songs like “Fake” and “Faith Don’t Fail” to the lack of over-processed studio effects on songs like “Psalms”. Whitlock’s “God and A Girl” is simple, honest and different.

Whitlock channels the struggle into song that we as Christians face everyday. We have our doubts sometimes, we wonder what He has planned for us, but our Faith and belief in Him keep us moving forward. “God And A Girl” reminds me of a rough ride down the raging river that life can be. Through faith though, we can cling to that raft with the strength of a hundred men.

This album is a departure from the outsider views about what Christian music should be. Follow along the album and see the journey of Whitlock’s life, songs like “Testify” tells us she still has questions, as we all do but, its okay. He knows our own journeys won’t be easy but He will never put anything in our way that will keep us from slaying our own personal Goliath.

With a raspy, dark edge to her voice, Whitlock shows her influences of artists like Sarah McLaughlin; with her heartfelt honesty she reminds me of Jennifer Knapp. Throughout the album, however, Whitlock defines her own voice and style.

While each song contributes to the great story to hear and learn from, other stand-out tracks that bear mentioning are “Cost of Being Free” and “In This Hour”

Take the “God and A Girl” album, the lyrics and a set of headphones and put yourself in your own world for 14 tracks of self reflection, and listen to the story she had to tell.

Stephen Hinkle

(Nashville, Tennessee) – September 8, 2008 – The Chicago-based Blue Myrtle Records is pleased to introduce singer/songwriter Stephen Hinkle, whose debut album will be released on October 28, 2008 through a distribution agreement with Infinity Music Distribution. With an established fan base already in place, Hinkle is poised to be one of 2008’s top worship leaders.

With a blend of energetic rhythms, colorfully textured vocals and Christ-centered lyrics, Hinkle delivers a solid performance on his self-titled national debut. The 12-song collection represents a diversity of worship styles ranging from adult contemporary to Gospel.

As a young teenager, Hinkle benefited from an apprenticeship with his church’s worship leader, Dennis Jernigan - the songwriter who penned the worship anthem “You Are My All in All.” It was during these formative years that God changed Hinkle’s desire from seeking to receive praise for the talents he had been given, to using those talents as a tool to lead others in giving praise to God.

Hinkle began leading worship for youth camps, retreats and adult conferences, and soon his songs gained recognition by the gospel music community at large after receiving first place awards in multiple categories at the Gospel Music Association’s annual Music in the Rockies event in Estes Park, Colorado. His love for music and ministry eventually led him to a full-time position as Pastor of Worship Development at Lakeland Church in the Chicago area where he has been leading worship since 2003.

Texas Rockers to Release Full-Length Debut in Early 2009

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) July 7, 2008 – Texas rock band One Minute Halo recently signed with Dallas-based indie label Empiric Records and plans to release its debut album Against the Grain in early 2009. The project will have national distribution via Empiric and Universal/Fontana.

Vocalist Jeromy Moorehead, guitarists Joey Catalano and Terry Johnson, bassist Chris Downs and drummer Brian Butts are One Minute Halo. Playing shows with heavyweights like Taproot, Sevendust, Kittie and Filter, the band thrives on touring, amassing hundreds of performances to sharpen itself sonically. Its music is heavy, melodic and dynamic, bringing a universal lyrical appeal that relates to a variety of listeners.

It was inevitable for Francesca Battistelli to pursue a musical career, being born to parents with an extensive theater background – they met when her dad was the assistant conductor for the traveling production of “The King and I”; her mom played the part of Anna, the show’s female lead (alongside Yul Brynner as the King). And then, at just six years old, Battistelli was inspired after catching “The Secret Garden” on Broadway. From Houston, Texas, we find Matthew and Lizi. It’s great to see a husband and wife working so closely together. They both lead worship at Fellowship of Memorial in West Houston and perform their music in area venues.

Last summer they released their second album, “The Meaning of it All,” which in addition to having some really powerful music could be quite possibly the coolest CD cover ever.

The CD is a mix of powerful, soulful tunes that inspire and move you. “The Meaning of it All” is a definite add to anyone’s praise and worship collection.

Brooke Williams has been very involved in music with her Church and youth groups. Her parents, also huge music fans, have always encouraged creativity in their children. I had heard Brooke sing a few times before, but this day was kind of special. She had been writing songs now and she was going to play one for me. So, I sat back in this armchair and she started playing this melody that I still to this day find myself humming from time to time.

The song was “Only Yours,” a teenage testament (I should mention she was 15 at the time) to her love of Jesus. What I found very profound about the song was that it wasn’t just a worship song but a kind of conversation with Jesus, letting him know that “I know I am just a kid, I am gonna make mistakes, but I know that I can always count on you and I will do my best to do the right thing.”

Now, almost two years later, Brooke is still writing, performing and has even learned to play the guitar. But she is still the same girl I sat with at that piano, still learning, teaching and still doing her best.

I was very excited when she emailed me to let me know she performed “Only Yours” and recorded it to post on YouTube. I was surprised to see her sitting in a chair with a guitar rather than at a piano. It was an interesting take on that song that seems to have grown up with her. I am still a fan of the original version and hopefully she will one day have an album with both versions on it.

Does becoming a star matter to her? I think she would be thrilled to get out there and spread the word through her songs, but I also believe that she is very comfortable being part of something even greater. Her personal relationship with Jesus and his music coming through her heart, hands and voice.
