It was as a student at Northern Arizona University in 2004 that Nate began to develop his singer/songwriter skills, playing just about anywhere that would have him. On advice from his brother Dan, Nate entered the American Christian Music Showcase competition. This competition could have stopped him in his tracks as he didn’t even place at all. For many young artists without the inner strength to build on criticism, this has the potential to end a future career and send them home doubting their talent. One of the judges, Aaron Rice, encouraged Nate to continue work on his music and enter the 2005 Gospel Music Association’s Music in the Rockies vocal competition three months later. Just three months later? What could possibly change in just three months? Nate didn’t really know but; he saw it as another opportunity to get feedback on how to improve his craft.

“I didn’t have high expectations. I just wanted to hear what professionals had to say so I would know how to improve. When I won, no one was more shocked than I was. I was just floored.”

Now it was time for Nate to step up to the task. Nate was headed to Nashville.

But the songwriting process wasn’t that easy. Separated from his close-knit family, in a strange new town, Nate was having a hard time finding his own voice. Enter again, the voice of the judge from that first competition - his now writing partner and friend Aaron Rice.

“One day we were sitting in the writing room in the studio and Aaron said, ‘You need to stop worrying. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t have what it takes, so just be yourself. Write who you are. Write you.’”

And that he did for his 2007 debut record “Here With Me.” From the first track to the last, this album is just that. Nate puts himself on display with a strong confidence in who he is and where he came from.

Stepping away from the album, spend some time with Nate on his web page or myspace page and you will see this. Nate has a voice in his blogs and bulletins that are way beyond his years. Perhaps, it is his growing up in a most unconventional family that gave him this wisdom. Reading his bio, you can see this maturity in his statements. “Your first album is your first and sometimes last impression, so I wanted it to be a reflection of my own life and musical style.” For a young artist inspired by so many influential artists, this could be the hardest thing to do - to find your own sound. natehuss2 Nate Huss “Being adopted into a family of eight children, going to a private school, playing sports, living in a big city, it’s easy to feel like you’re another number, a blah on the sidewalk,” Nate says. “For me, realizing that God knew exactly who I was going to be before I was created absolutely floors me. To think that God had this whole plan laid out for me, as lame as I can be, as someone who messes up on a daily basis, is mind-blowing. He really does love me, regardless.”

For Nate the album is his story and they are forever entwined. His own voice through the music is heard loud and clear. His belief in God and Nate’s life story, the inspiration of family, friends and mentors all resonate throughout the album to bring together a biography of a young man whose career is just beginning with a kind of knowledge some artists take years to discover.

Christopher is a Christian, husband, graphic designer, web programmer, photographer, ninja, poet, cat whisperer (though I think my own cats don't speak English). I tend to write as it comes out so I keep the editor quite busy. I have the grammar skills of a Nerf football but it makes sense if you read it over a few times.
